ByteDance is dipping a toe into autonomous driving, according to multiple industry sources who spoke with 36Kr. The project is still in early planning stages, led by the world model team under Zhou Chang at the company's Seed division.
The scenarios ByteDance is considering include unmanned logistics. The company has already spoken with several leading autonomous driving teams and extended offers to some engineers working on driver-assist and self-driving tech.
World models can learn the rules of real-world environments and predict changes in road conditions — overlap with what autonomous driving requires. But a general world model still falls short of a purpose-built driving model, and ByteDance will need to fill gaps in road data and engineering capabilities.
ByteDance responded by saying it is conducting early-stage research and exploration in frontiers like physical AI, but has no plans to launch a smart driving business.
