ByteDance is pouring the money it makes from Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) and TikTok into an aggressive AI push. Doubao, its AI assistant, is just the entry point — the company is also building foundation models, video-generation tools, enterprise cloud services, overseas data centers, and its own inference chips.
Doubao has reached 324 million monthly active users. Its foundation model team, Seed, has expanded to roughly 2,000 people. Volcengine, ByteDance's cloud business, accounts for 16% of China's AI cloud services revenue, ranking second. ByteDance is also pushing data centers in five countries and developing inference chips for internal use.
ByteDance used to make money by algorithmically distributing content and selling ads. Now it wants to bring models, apps, cloud, and chips all in-house, transforming from a traffic platform into a full-stack AI company.
