Windsurf 2.0 bets big on AI agents with a new command center and native

Windsurf just doubled down on the AI coding arms race with version 2.0, a major update that brings a new Agent Command Center and native Devin integration directly into the editor. Announced on April 15, 2026, the release targets developers and teams who want their local IDE work and cloud-based AI agents running in tandem—without constantly switching between separate tools. Windsurf pitches this as a unified workflow where local and cloud agents can actually collaborate.

The Agent Command Center is the new control room

The headline feature is the Agent Command Center, a Kanban-style dashboard inside Windsurf that shows all your active agent sessions in one place, grouped by status. It displays both local Cascade sessions running in the editor and cloud-based Devin sessions operating on separate virtual machines. Windsurf also introduced Spaces, which bundle agent sessions, pull requests, files, and shared context around a single task or project. The idea? You can hop between multi-agent jobs without losing your place or rebuilding context every single time.

Devin is now baked right into the editor

Devin's direct integration is arguably the biggest part of this launch. Users can now plan work locally with Cascade and then, with one click, hand it off to Devin for execution. According to Windsurf, Devin can handle debugging, testing, deployment, and other longer-running software tasks on its own virtual machine—complete with desktop, browser, and full computer-use capabilities. That means work can continue even after you close your laptop.

For self-serve users, Devin is included in the Pro, Max, and Teams plans, consuming the shared Windsurf quota. New GitHub connections can get up to $50 in extra usage credits. Access is rolling out gradually, and enterprise availability depends on admin enablement and purchased Cognition Platform access.

A strategic shift from partnership to product

Windsurf now operates under Cognition AI, the company behind Devin, and this release marks the transition from partnership talk to integrated reality. That's notable because back in July 2025, Windsurf said it would keep investing in its product as a standalone offering without forcing Devin alongside it. Windsurf 2.0 doesn't replace the core editor, but it clearly pivots the product toward a hybrid local-plus-cloud agent model. This moves Windsurf into a more direct competition around agent orchestration—not just autocomplete or chat in the IDE.

It's part of a broader trend where AI tools are becoming desktop operators. For example, OpenAI's Codex morphs into a desktop superapp that can click, type, and browse, while Perplexity's AI Agent Now Lives on Your Mac. Even Adobe's new AI agent can boss Photoshop and Premiere around for you. Windsurf's play is to own the workflow where these agents meet.
