WeChat is opening its AI ecosystem to mini-program developers, and it's offering a surprisingly invasive option: letting the platform automatically read your app's source code and directly manipulate its pages.
The WeChat Open Platform announced that developers can now enable AI capabilities for their mini-programs—the lightweight apps inside the messaging giant. Once authorized, a mini-program becomes an "agent tool" that WeChat's AI can call. To cater to different developer needs, there are two access modes. In automatic mode, when a developer submits a new version for review, WeChat reads the source code and automatically analyzes the page structure, allowing the AI to directly operate the mini-program. In development mode, developers build custom integrations to their own specs, which then go through WeChat's evaluation and approval before the AI can use them. The two modes aren't mutually exclusive—developers can enable both.
The integration is currently in beta testing. WeChat emphasizes that opting in is entirely voluntary, and mini-programs that don't participate will not be affected.
