OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, aiming to provide 100,000 researchers with free access to cutting-edge models and research tools by 2027. The first 10,000 will gain access this summer, starting with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.

Participants will also receive increased Deep Research quotas, higher usage limits, and longer context windows. The platform comes with over 75 built-in life sciences skills and can connect to paper repositories, public genomics databases, and computational notebooks.

This benefit isn't available to everyone at a university. Applicants must come from selected research universities, and verify their institutional affiliation, ongoing research projects, and scientific purpose. Once approved, they can invite up to 4 collaborators from the same institution. Data is not used for training by default.
