OpenAI's Codex now supports controlling an agent on a Linux server directly from your phone. On the server, run codex remote-control start, then codex remote-control pair to generate a temporary pairing code. Open ChatGPT's Remote page on your phone, enter that code, and you're connected. Codex is still running locally on the server — your phone just handles checking on tasks, sending new instructions, and approving actions.
That makes it especially useful for GPU clusters and headless Linux machines. Researcher Tanishq Mathew Abraham, for one, has used it from his phone to manage automated research experiments and training jobs on a Slurm GPU cluster, and community members have already gotten it running on Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and other setups.
OpenAI still labels the feature Experimental, and its official docs aren't quite caught up: Developer Commands already lists the CLI pairing method, but the main Remote Connections document still says phone pairing has to start from the Mac or Windows desktop app. The GitHub issue tracker also has reports of Linux and Android pairing failures and devices that never show up.
