Ghostty creator uses ChatGPT to audit bills, recovers $45K

Mitchell Hashimoto, the creator of the open-source terminal Ghostty and co-founder of HashiCorp, gave ChatGPT read-only access to his email to automatically check construction invoices.

ChatGPT went through three years of records and flagged roughly $45,000 in billing errors — including incorrect amounts, duplicate invoices, and wrong recipients.

The invoices were typically low-resolution scanned PDFs, around 50 pages each. Hashimoto says he manually verified each flagged item and has already gotten refunds or credits.

He previously spent about $1,800 on ChatGPT subscriptions. The amount recovered is roughly 25 times that cost.
