ChatGPT Work is OpenAI’s new general-purpose agent that can process files and execute tasks in the cloud for hours at a time. Some developers have discovered it runs on a Linux cloud environment — and they’ve successfully connected to it remotely from their local machines.
Pro subscribers get a cloud environment with 9 CPU cores, about 21GB of RAM, and 63GB of disk. Once connected, users can directly edit files or install software using a terminal, VS Code, or Cursor.
But this isn’t a dedicated server. OpenAI hasn’t disclosed the environment’s lifespan, file retention policies, or any service guarantees. When a session ends or the environment is replaced, processes may disappear and files may not persist.
