Zed lets you use ChatGPT subscription in its editor, calls out Claude and Copilot

Code editor Zed just announced that its built-in AI agent now natively supports ChatGPT accounts. Log in with your ChatGPT subscription, and you can call OpenAI models and Codex capabilities directly — no more paying per API call.

Previously, developers who wanted to use Codex inside an editor had to set up an ACP adapter (the open-source Agent Communication Protocol bridge) manually. This update eliminates that middle step, turning authorization into a simple one-click login. Developers who prefer other environments like JetBrains can still use that same ACP adapter to avoid API fees. Enterprise teams also keep the option to connect directly with an API key.

The industry is rapidly moving toward usage-based pricing for coding agents. Zed took direct aim at two rivals in its announcement: Anthropic, which said that starting June 15th, its Agent SDK (the underpinning of Claude Code) will be decoupled from Claude subscriptions and billed separately; and GitHub Copilot, which will fully switch to usage-based pricing on June 1st. Zed thanked OpenAI for going against the trend.

Combined with today's news that xAI is allowing Grok subscriptions to access the open-source agent Hermes, it's clear that foundation model providers are trying to win over developers scared off by expensive API bills — by letting third-party apps tap into consumer subscription compute.
