OpenAI Codex chief once promoted proxies. Now he's warning against them

Just a month ago, OpenAI Codex chief Tibo Sottiaux was happily promoting reverse proxy tools. Now he's warning that sharing your subscription could land you in the fraud-detection crosshairs.

Sottiaux was responding to the latest controversy over reduced Codex quotas. He says OpenAI doesn't quietly tweak limits, and after digging into some complaints, his team found that a lot of affected users were running sub2api — a tool that turns a regular subscription into API-style traffic, which people then split or share across multiple accounts. OpenAI's anti-fraud system apparently flags that pattern.

The irony? Just a month ago, Sottiaux was personally recommending a different proxy utility called CLIProxyAPI, complete with a tutorial on logging in via Codex OAuth and wiring GPT-5.6 Sol into Claude.
