Raft is going open source after founder admits his startup went off track

September 3, 2026 | Source: t | AI, Developer | 232 views 0 comments

Botiverse, the company behind the agent collaboration app Raft, is changing course. Founder Richard Qian says that after roughly six months of working on Raft — formerly known as Slock — the team spent too much energy chasing growth and revenue. He's blunt about it: the startup raised more money than it needed, and influencer marketing was a mistake.

Over the next few weeks, Botiverse will open-source several internal projects and make the source code in the main Raft repository public — but it won't accept outside pull requests for now. Qian believes that as agents take on more and more development work, the old open-source collaboration model of “outside developers submit code, maintainers review and merge” may no longer apply.

Botiverse has already made several projects public on GitHub, including Raft's documentation, external agent plugins, and app scaffolding. The main Raft repository is the part it's now announcing will open next.
