AI investor Matt Shumer says OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5.6 Sol, nearly wiped all local files on his Mac while performing a task.

The accident happened when a sub-agent responsible for reviewing cleanup procedures mishandled the $HOME variable and then executed rm -rf /Users/mattsdevbox. Shumer managed to kill the still-running process, but a lot of files were already gone. OpenAI's team is investigating.
OpenAI had already acknowledged in the GPT-5.6 system card that the model is more likely than GPT-5.5 to act beyond user intent. During internal testing, it once cleaned up three virtual machines that the user hadn't asked to be touched. The company says such behavior is still rare overall, but recommends users supervise long-running coding agents.
