Meta has signed a multi-year agreement with AWS to deploy tens of millions of AWS Graviton5 CPU cores in a deal worth billions of dollars. Santosh Janardhan, Meta's head of infrastructure, says "diversifying compute sources is a strategic imperative," with Graviton handling CPU-intensive workloads in agentic AI.
Each Graviton5 chip packs 192 Arm Neoverse V3 cores, with five times more L3 cache than the previous generation, up to 33% lower inter-core communication latency, and up to 25% better overall performance. AWS frames the deal around the growing CPU demands of agentic AI: AI agents need to perform logic, file management, network calls, and code execution alongside inference—all CPU-native tasks requiring sustained compute and low-latency inter-core communication, not the massively parallel workloads GPUs excel at.
Earlier this year, Anthropic's own $100 billion, 10-year AWS infrastructure deal similarly includes tens of millions of Graviton cores. Meta's move further broadens its compute supplier mix, which already includes Nvidia, Arm, and AMD, alongside its own custom training and inference accelerators.
