OpenAI's Codex desktop app has silently rolled out a global dictation feature. Now you can hold down the Fn key and speak into any macOS app — the transcribed text appears right at the cursor, no need to switch to the Codex window.

Previously, Codex's voice input was limited to inside the app: desktop users had to press Ctrl+M when an input box was visible, and CLI users used the space bar. The new feature expands dictation to the system level, putting it in direct competition with third-party global dictation tools like Wispr Flow — but for ChatGPT subscribers, there's no extra cost. The settings page also adds a "Recent dictations" list to recover any incorrectly entered transcriptions.
The update follows other recent Codex additions like Chronicle, a screen-watching memory feature.
