Europe's AI compute gap: Mistral targets 1GW in 2030, Meta hits 14GW next year

Mistral is trying to give Europe an AI compute upgrade — and the numbers show just how steep the climb is. The French AI lab says it wants 200MW of capacity by the end of 2027, then 1GW by 2030. To get those data centers built, it's recruiting European industrial names like ASML and CMA CGM to sign multi-year compute contracts early.

But hold that "1GW" up against the US, and it starts to look a little sad. Meta is on track to hit 7GW this year, then double to 14GW in 2027. The 1GW Meta added in just the first half of this year already equals Mistral's entire target for 2030.

OpenAI, meanwhile, has locked in more than 10GW of US AI infrastructure — with another 3GW added in the last 90 days. Anthropic has signed long-term compute deals with Amazon and Google at up to 5GW scale each, and Amazon alone plans to have close to 1GW ready by the end of this year.

Europe is still rounding up customers and funding for its first gigawatt. US AI leaders are already planning their next growth spurt in 10GW chunks.
