Mitchell Hashimoto — yes, the Vagrant and Terraform creator and HashiCorp co-founder — is moving his open-source terminal emulator Ghostty off GitHub.
Ghostty is a modern terminal emulator that's gained serious traction over the past couple of years. Hashimoto, who joined GitHub in 2008 as user #1299 and has used the platform for 18 years, says he opens GitHub every single day — even checking it on his honeymoon before his wife woke up. GitHub has been the home of his career, his open-source projects, and his passion. He admits one of his motivations for building Vagrant was the hope that GitHub might hire him.

But over the past month, he started marking an “X” in his journal for every day a GitHub outage affected his work. Almost every day got an X. On the day he wrote the announcement, GitHub Actions went down again, costing him two hours of code review. Hashimoto says a platform that shuts you out for hours every day is no longer suitable for serious development work.
He stresses that this decision has been brewing for months and only coincidentally follows the massive ElasticSearch outage on April 27.
The migration will be gradual. He'll keep a read-only mirror on GitHub for now, and he's in talks with multiple vendors — both commercial and open-source — about where to move. His personal projects will stay put for now; Ghostty is the first to go.
