Firecrawl open-sources AnyDoc, a 4.4ms Office-to-Markdown parser

August 7, 2026 | Source: t | AI, Developer | 293 views 0 comments

Firecrawl has open-sourced AnyDoc, a document parsing library written in Rust. It converts Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF files directly into Markdown that's ready for large language models to consume. It also ships an Agent Skill that works out of the box with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and other agentic coding tools.

In Firecrawl's own benchmark, AnyDoc clocked a median conversion time of 4.4 milliseconds per document. Microsoft's MarkItDown took 134.8 milliseconds — about 31 times slower — while the next-fastest option, Mammoth, needed 52.5 milliseconds. On quality, AnyDoc scored 81 overall, versus 65 for MarkItDown and 57 for Docling.
