OpenAI is cutting off Cursor. Its CEO says it's only 5% of traffic.

Cursor co-founder and CEO Michael Truell says OpenAI has notified the company that it plans to block Cursor users from accessing OpenAI models in three months. In a post on X, Truell said OpenAI models currently account for about 5% of Cursor's user traffic, and that Cursor is in talks with OpenAI's team to sort it out.

Truell described Cursor as one of OpenAI's earliest customers, with the two companies working together for years. He said Cursor had trusted OpenAI to act as "neutral infrastructure" for its business. The partnership is now shifting just as Cursor faces intensifying competition in the AI coding space and pressure from model providers building their own apps.

As previously reported, OpenAI announced an end to the nearly four-year partnership two weeks after SpaceX closed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor. Going forward, new models will not be integrated into Cursor, and direct supply of existing models is slated to end on November 12, 2026. The contract reportedly lets OpenAI back out if Cursor gets acquired. This time, OpenAI's message was a barely veiled attack on Elon Musk by name: it said Twitter violated its OpenAI contract after Musk bought it, and that Musk admitted in court this year that xAI had improperly used OpenAI models.
