vLLM bans fake-PR resume padder, adds email verification to stop AI slop

Open-source large language model inference engine vLLM announced on X that it has permanently banned a contributor caught submitting fake pull requests to pad their resume. The incident exposes a growing gray industry of "resume-driven development" (RDD) in open-source communities, and raises questions about how to filter low-credibility contributions in the age of AI.

The trouble started with PR #42143, which claimed to fix a bug in how the speculative sampling model Eagle3 reads the norm_before_fc configuration from NVIDIA Checkpoints. The PR looked legitimate — it had a detailed test plan and performance report, and passed continuous integration (CI) to get merged. But community review later found the bug never actually existed in the codebase. The contributor had essentially invented a problem and then "solved" it. Leaked chat logs revealed the PR was actually a training project from a paid interview-prep agency, where students fabricate or inflate contributions to well-known open-source projects to bulk up their résumés for big-tech job applications. The contributor has now been permanently banned.

vLLM's maintainers say low-credibility contributions like these add enormous review burden and operational costs. And with AI coding assistants getting cheaper and more capable, generating a flood of trivial patches or even fake bug fixes has never been easier — putting open-source trust and code quality at risk.

To combat both "AI slop" and fraudulent contributions while protecting genuine users, vLLM is exploring a new review process. Contributors whose important PRs aren't getting maintainer attention can email [email protected] from a verifiable institutional email address (corporate or academic), describing their production or research use case, the actual problem encountered, and how their PR fixes it. The goal is to use a strong identity/affiliation verification system to prioritize high-quality submissions that solve real-world pain points.
