Is Google DeepMind still a frontier AI lab? SemiAnalysis has a blunt answer: no.
In a new report, the research firm declares that DeepMind is no longer at the cutting edge of AI — and that the probability of it regaining state-of-the-art status is zero. The reason: DeepMind is losing elite talent and compute at the same time, leaving it without the people or the hardware to keep up.
The report's roster of high-profile departures includes Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, who recently left to found a startup; Noam Shazeer, the former Gemini co-lead who had already moved to OpenAI; and Nobel laureate John Jumper.
