Perplexity is building a Cursor rival called Teammate

July 9, 2026 | Source: businessinsider | AI, Perplexity | 401 views 0 comments

The AI search company Perplexity is quietly developing an AI coding tool called Teammate, taking direct aim at Cursor, Claude Code, and OpenAI Codex.

Teammate has been used internally by Perplexity engineers since May, and it's built for longer-term software engineering tasks — moving projects forward, debugging, monitoring services, and finding vulnerabilities in internal systems. It's model-agnostic, meaning it's not tied to any single underlying model. Think of it as an engineering project agent rather than a code completion tool.

Perplexity CTO Denis Yarats has been pushing engineers to embrace AI for coding, arguing that by the end of the year or sooner, software engineers should "stop looking at code" and just use AI.
