OpenClaw's Voice Agent Just Got a Lot Faster on Google Meet Calls

The open-source personal AI assistant OpenClaw just shipped v2026.5.4, and the headline changes revolve around its voice agent, plugin migration, and gateway performance. The biggest upgrade? Google Meet and Voice Call integration. When a call comes in via Twilio, OpenClaw now pipes audio through Gemini's real-time voice bridge, complete with segmented audio streams, backpressure handling, and an interrupt queue that clears the way for faster responses. The old TwiML fallback is out of the real-time loop entirely.

This update also continues cleaning up the mess left by plugin externalization. If an official external plugin isn't installed, config migration now prompts the correct `openclaw plugins install

` command. And the update, rollback, and cleanup paths between ClawHub, npm, and the old built-in plugins have been fleshed out — so there's less chance of plugin detritus or failed installations after an upgrade. Then there's the real meat for anyone running OpenClaw long-term: startup and hot path performance. The system now reuses model directories, plugin metadata, and agent workspace snapshots much more aggressively, and it's moved test helpers, QR pairing, and TypeBox builds out of the gateway's hot path. For self-hosted users, that's arguably more important than any single feature — fewer plugin scans, less startup lag, and a lot fewer edge cases where the config is still there but the runtime can't find it.
