OpenAI's developer-focused coding assistant, Codex, just hit a new milestone: 4 million monthly active users. The company's engineering lead Thomas Sottiaux and CEO Sam Altman announced the figure on April 21st, noting it took less than two weeks to jump from the previously announced 3 million.

To celebrate, OpenAI reset rate limits for all user tiers that same day. The growth spurt comes as Codex has been rapidly evolving from a cloud-based coding tool into a more ambitious desktop superapp that can click, type, and browse on your Mac. It's also getting a personality makeover with the addition of cute pixel-art avatars, a feature that's currently being tested in the app's settings.
