OpenAI has emailed over 8,000 developers who applied to attend its GPT-5.5 launch party, granting them a 10x increase to their Codex rate limits on their personal ChatGPT accounts. The boost is effective immediately and runs through June 5th. And it doesn't matter if you actually got a party invite — everyone who signed up gets the reward.
Codex daily usage caps vary by subscription tier, so a 10x bump means developers can now prototype, debug, and deploy with GPT-5.5 far more frequently. Whether this stacks with the 20x multiplier available to Pro users (who pay $200 a month) is still unclear. Some users report OpenAI support told them it takes the higher of the two, not both — but the company hasn't officially commented.
Before the emails went out, CEO Sam Altman teased on X that he'd 'do something nice' for applicants who didn't get invites. The post racked up over 520,000 views in a few hours. The GPT-5.5 party itself is set for 5:55 PM PT on May 5th in San Francisco. All 8,000 spots filled within 24 hours. Coincidentally, Anthropic is hosting its own media reception for the Code with Claude developer conference the same evening — just across town.
This month-long free usage window is really a developer habit-forming experiment. When the limits snap back on June 5th, anyone who's woven Codex into their daily workflow will likely have to decide: pay up or cut back.
