OpenAI Codex bug floods SSD with logs, deletes your files

June 23, 2026 | Source: t | OpenAI | 241 views 0 comments

OpenAI's Codex, the company's terminal coding agent, has a nasty secret: it's been quietly destroying SSDs with a runaway logging defect. The tool writes an insane amount of debug data to a local SQLite database at ~/.codex/logs_2.sqlite.

According to tests, active use can produce about 37 TB of writes in just 21 days. That's a projected annual write volume of 640 TB — enough to kill most consumer SSDs within a year. The relentless I/O also bogs down your editor, making everything lag.

And it gets worse. The bug doesn't just wear out your hardware; it can also delete your files. OpenAI hasn't addressed the issue yet, but users are finding workarounds like disabling TRACE logging.

If you're using Codex, you might want to check your disk health — and maybe back up your work.
