OpenAI announced on May 4 that it's expanding its partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to build an enterprise-grade "native AI finance" solution. The system uses AI agents to take over core financial workflows — from forecasting and procurement to payments and month-end closing.
Under the arrangement, OpenAI is using its own finance department as the "zero customer" — a testing ground to validate the technology and refine the underlying capabilities. According to the company, without hiring anyone new, the team used custom agents and Codex to process five times the usual contract volume. During fundraising, a dedicated IR-GPT handled more than 200 investor interactions.
PwC is responsible for the complex internal controls, compliance, and overall finance transformation. The very next day, May 5, Anthropic also released 10 financial agent tools for Wall Street — and the rivalry extended beyond product: just this week, Anthropic also made headlines with a $200 billion Google Cloud commitment. The battle between the two major AI firms over core enterprise finance workflows is now fully underway.
