Anthropic has committed to spending $200 billion on Google Cloud over the next five years, according to a report from The Information on Tuesday. That pledge accounts for more than 40 percent of the unearned revenue — the so-called "revenue backlog" — that Google disclosed to investors last week.
Alphabet shares ticked up about 2 percent in after-hours trading on the news.
Anthropic says it trains and runs Claude on a variety of AI hardware, including Amazon AWS's Trainium chips, Google's own TPUs, and Nvidia GPUs. The startup is clearly keeping its options open.
In April, Google agreed to invest $10 billion in Anthropic, with the potential for another $30 billion if the AI company hits certain performance targets, and to help significantly expand its computing capacity.
Earlier, Anthropic struck a similar deal with Amazon, promising to buy over $100 billion in computing power from AWS over the next decade. Amazon, which had already invested $8 billion, is now on the hook for up to an additional $25 billion.
The result is a unique compute procurement strategy spread across the three major cloud giants: a ten-year, hundred-billion-dollar commitment to AWS, a five-year, two-hundred-billion-dollar pledge to Google Cloud, all while continuing to use Nvidia GPUs. This diversification reduces reliance on any single vendor — and makes Anthropic the ultimate prize in the cloud wars.
