Google Kills the Chromebook After 15 Years, Introduces Googlebook

Google has officially unveiled Googlebook, a new laptop category that marks the end of the 15-year Chromebook era. This isn't just a rebranding — it's a fundamental shift from an 'operating system' to an 'intelligent system.' Googlebook merges ChromeOS with the Android tech stack and is natively powered by Gemini AI. The first models go on sale this fall.

The update throws out traditional desktop logic and lets AI handle interaction and cross-device work:

  • Magic Pointer – developed with DeepMind, replaces the right-click paradigm. A simple shake of the mouse summons Gemini, which suggests actions based on screen context. Hover over a date in an email to instantly create a calendar event, or lasso a photo of a new sofa and a living room shot to render a composite.
  • Full Android phone integration – because the underlying OS is shared, you can order food delivery or complete a language lesson directly on the laptop screen without touching your phone. The file manager's new Quick Access feature lets you browse, search, and insert files from your phone without any manual transfer.
  • Create Your Widget – type a natural language request like "plan a family gathering," and Gemini pulls data from Gmail and Calendar to generate a dashboard with flights, hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, and a countdown timer.

The first Googlebook models will be built by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and all feature a distinctive Glowbar light strip as the category's signature design element. Under the hood, this is Google's counterpunch to Microsoft's Copilot+ PC and Apple's Mac: it brings the world's largest mobile ecosystem directly to the desktop, creating a seamless cross-device loop that rivals will struggle to match.
