Google forces Antigravity CLI migration, kills free Gemini CLI by June 2026

Google announced a detailed timeline for migrating its Gemini CLI command-line tool to the new Antigravity CLI. Due to a complete overhaul of the underlying framework, personal and free-tier users must manually move by June 18, 2026 — after that, the old tool will stop responding to requests.

The shutdown primarily hits individual developers and freelancers. Starting June 18, accounts using Google AI Pro, Ultra, or the personal free version of Gemini Code Assist will lose access to the old CLI. The Gemini Code Assist plugin for GitHub organizations will also stop taking new installations on the same day, with API access fully cut off in the following weeks. Google has posted migration documentation for reference.

Enterprise customers are spared: organizations with a Gemini Code Assist license can keep using the old CLI for legacy stability, or plug the new Antigravity CLI into existing projects to test it out. Individual developers who want to retain access to the old version must manually switch to a paid API key.

The new Antigravity CLI is written in Go, making it faster and more responsive. It fully integrates the old Agent Skills, Hooks, and Subagents mechanisms, but shifts to asynchronous background execution. Users can now kick off large refactors or multi-source research in parallel without locking up their terminal session. Antigravity CLI also shares the same agent management kernel as the Antigravity 2.0 desktop app, so any optimizations or changes to core agents sync automatically across both interfaces.
