At the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis fired back at critics who worry the company can't keep its top talent. His response comes after a string of high-profile departures — including Noam Shazeer, a foundational co-author of the Transformer paper, and John Jumper, a key architect of AlphaFold — triggered a brief panic on Wall Street. Google's stock dipped as much as 7 percent in a single day over concerns that the company is bleeding its AI brain trust.
But Hassabis struck a defiant tone. In his view, Google still fields the largest and deepest research bench in the industry, and he dismissed the idea that a few exits signal a systemic problem. "We have an amazing team," he said, pointing to the company's massive investment in custom TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) infrastructure as a structural advantage that competitors can't easily replicate. The message was clear: Google may lose a few stars, but its hardware moat is intact.
