Copilot CLI remote control goes live — approve tasks from your phone

May 20, 2026 | Source: github | AI, Microsoft | 160 views 0 comments

GitHub is rolling out remote control for Copilot CLI to mobile and web. Now when you fire off an AI task from your local terminal, VS Code, or JetBrains, the execution screen and status stream live to your phone.

This changes the game for long-running tasks. While the system churns away on code generation or refactoring in the background, you can walk away from your desk. When Copilot hits a checkpoint — needing permission or input parameters — it pushes a request to the GitHub Mobile app. You can see the plan on your phone and tap Approve, Cancel, or queue up the next command.

The update also removes the old requirement that tasks must be tied to a hosted repository. Even if you're working on a purely local directory with no GitHub connection, you can monitor progress in the web-based agent panel. For enterprise users subject to security policies, this cross-device takeover feature is disabled by default — admins need to flip the relevant policies in the backend to activate it.
