A surge in AI agent-generated code commits has pushed GitHub's infrastructure to the breaking point, forcing Microsoft to backpedal on its promise to move all GitHub workloads to Azure and instead buy emergency computing power from rival Amazon Web Services.
According to Business Insider, two sources say that while Microsoft still plans to fully migrate GitHub to Azure by 2027, the current wave of outages and capacity crises has forced the company to tap AWS for elastic compute support.
GitHub official projections show the platform expects 14 billion commits in 2026 — up from just 1 billion in 2025. GitHub CTO Vlad Fedorov revealed that the team planned for 10x capacity scaling in October 2025, but after an explosion of agent-driven development workflows in late December, they had to revise the target to 30x by February 2026.
The infrastructure strain is already threatening developer ecosystem stability. In May 2026, GitHub suffered nine service degradation incidents. A month earlier, HashiCorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto announced plans to move his Ghostty project off the platform, bluntly stating that GitHub's frequent outages had made it unsuitable for serious development work.
Despite Microsoft's projected $190 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, CFO Amy Hood warned that compute supply constraints would persist through the end of the year.
In response to the multi-cloud arrangement, a Microsoft spokesperson said that the explosion of agent-based development since late 2025 has "stress-tested" GitHub's infrastructure, and that the company is accelerating its Azure migration while using a multi-cloud strategy to ensure elasticity and scale. Microsoft isn't alone in buying compute from a rival: Google recently signed a multi-year deal with SpaceX to purchase $920 million per month in computing resources.
