AI coding startup Cognition has closed a funding round of over $1 billion, pushing its pre-money valuation to $25 billion. That's roughly double the valuation from just eight months ago, when it raised $400 million at a post-money valuation of $10.2 billion. The round was led by Lux Capital and General Catalyst, with existing investors Founders Fund and 8VC doubling down, and new backers including Ribbit Capital, Atreides, and Layer Global joining in.
The core driver behind this massive raise? Strong commercial traction and enterprise adoption. Over the past six months, Devin's enterprise usage has grown 50% month over month. Cognition now boasts an annualized revenue run rate (ARR) of $492 million, with clients ranging from Mercedes-Benz and NASA to Goldman Sachs and Banco Santander.
There was a widespread assumption that the big foundation model companies would eventually eat the AI coding tools market alive. Facing direct competition from native tools like Anthropic's Claude Code, OpenAI's Codex, and Google's Jules, Cognition has proven — through Devin's rapid growth and last year's acquisition of Windsurf — that independent coding agents can not only survive but thrive in real engineering environments.
