OpenAI is building a real-time voice mode for Codex, its coding assistant. The idea: you talk to it while it keeps grinding away on slow tasks in the background.
Public code reveals the feature has been under development for months. Voice sessions can be tied to existing task threads, and they connect via WebRTC or WebSocket. While the agent runs in the background, you can keep adding instructions or tweaking the direction.
The latest strings found in the Codex client show that the voice interface will surface status updates like command execution, file changes, MCP calls, and permission approvals. Coordination prompts also mention tasks like browsing, apps, documents, shopping, and ordering food. OpenAI hasn't officially confirmed any of this.
OpenAI product lead Tibo posted today that "tomorrow has a Codex feel to it." The community is reading between the lines: the feature could launch as soon as July 24th.
