Altara raises $7M from Greylock and Jeff Dean to bring AI troubleshooting to semiconductor

Altara has raised a $7 million seed round led by Greylock, with participation from Neo, BoxGroup, Liquid 2 Ventures, and angel investors including Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and executives from OpenAI and AMD. The company is building an AI platform for the physical sciences, using specialized agents to pull together fragmented data scattered across spreadsheets, sensor logs, and legacy systems in fields like semiconductors, batteries, and advanced materials. Its goal: shrink fault diagnosis and experiment design from weeks to minutes.

Co-founders Eva Tuecke and Catherine Yeo met as Harvard computer science undergrads. Tuecke previously worked at Fermilab on high-energy particle physics before joining SpaceX to work on Starlink. Yeo built a coding agent at terminal startup Warp and did AI research at IBM Research, MIT, and Harvard; her five older relatives all hold EE PhDs and work in the semiconductor industry.

Greylock partner Corinne Riley compares Altara to an SRE (site reliability engineer) for the physical world. When a software system goes down, an SRE checks observability tools to find the faulty code change. When a battery or wafer fails, Altara's agents comb through scientific data to pinpoint the problem. Greylock's portfolio already includes Resolve AI, a software fault-diagnosis startup valued at $1.5 billion; Altara is applying the same logic to hardware.
