SpaceXAI open-sources Grok Build after backlash over uploading full codebases

July 16, 2026 | Source: x | xAI | 215 views 0 comments

SpaceXAI found itself in hot water after its Grok Build tool was caught uploading entire Git repositories by default. Now, the company is trying to make amends by open-sourcing the tool and resetting all user quotas.

The company announced it has released the source code for Grok Build under the Apache 2.0 license, including the CLI, terminal interface, and agent runtime. But don't get too excited — this is just the coding tool, not the Grok 4.5 model. The open-source code still requires connecting to a cloud model to actually run, and the official repository isn't accepting external contributions.

Before this announcement, reports emerged that Grok Build was uploading complete Git repositories without user consent. SpaceXAI responded by adjusting data retention settings and promising to delete all previously uploaded user data. As part of the cleanup, the company has also reset usage quotas for all users.
