Shopify's CEO Hates AI Slop — But His Company Is Fueling the Problem

The Atlantic has a new exposé on e-commerce giant Shopify, painting it as a poster child for the dark art of generative engine optimization (GEO) — where companies poison data sources to hijack AI recommendations.

The technique is brutally simple: Shopify's own site is plastered with dozens of self-published e-commerce platform rankings that, shocker, always put Shopify at No. 1. Large language models like ChatGPT, when asked about building an online store, can't tell independent reviews from corporate puff pieces. So they swallow Shopify's data whole, handing the company a victory in the battle for AI-generated recommendation lists.

Here's the kicker — and it's a doozy. Shopify's founder and CEO, Tobi Lütke, is a self-professed information purity fanatic. He's publicly urged people to "read non-fiction that has stood the test of time, not middle manager slop." He even recently built and open-sourced a local retrieval tool called QMD, which keeps AI agents searching only a trusted local document library — safe from the web's ad-driven noise and GEO slop. But while Lütke preaches, his marketing department keeps flooding the public web with machine-reading-optimized garbage rankings. The company's business practices are running directly counter to its CEO's personal tech ideals.

And Shopify isn't alone. Design platform Figma and project management tool ClickUp have also jumped into the "sloptimization" arms race — cranking out content that's built for bots, not humans. As AI agents get empowered to book and buy on their own, this pollution-style marketing is turning the future internet into a battlefield where machines hustle other machines.
