Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke has a warning for Anthropic: if Claude Code keeps refusing to read AGENTS.md and .agents/skills, he's considering banning it inside Shopify.
Lütke points out that with Codex, Cursor, Claude Code and other AI coding tools being used side-by-side in enterprise teams, more and more coding agents are adopting a unified AGENTS.md file to define project conventions, test procedures, and agent instructions. Claude Code, however, still leans primarily on CLAUDE.md and .claude/skills. That means the same repository can hand different rules to different agents — a classic "split brain" problem.
For solo developers, maintaining multiple config files is a minor annoyance. But at a company like Shopify, with a huge number of engineers, multiple agent contexts have to stay in sync. If they drift, agents can start behaving in ways that violate team standards.
On the surface, this is a fight over config file formats. Underneath, it's really a question of whether AI coding agents inside enterprises should standardize on vendor-specific conventions or settle on a cross-agent universal standard.
