OpenAI is pushing Codex well beyond the coding editor. Developers can now plug the agent runtime behind Codex directly into their own software to handle customer service, operations, security, research, and more — no need to stay in the world of writing code and building dev tools.
The system, called Codex Harness, has been open source for a while. It was originally the machinery that let Codex write code. Now OpenAI is explicitly saying you can build full agent products on top of it for customer support, ops, security, and other gigs.
In a logistics back-office demo, Codex shows what that looks like: When an unusual order shows up, Codex automatically digs through the data, calls enterprise tools, compares possible fixes, and only asks a human for confirmation when it's time to actually modify the order. The whole thing happens inside the business software — no need to open Codex or chat with a separate bot.
