OpenAI Acquires Personal Finance Startup Hiro in Talent Acquisition Move

April 14, 2026 | alex | AI, OpenAI | 198 views 0 comments

OpenAI has acquired Hiro Finance, an AI-powered personal finance startup, in what appears to be a talent-focused deal. Founder Ethan Bloch announced the acquisition on LinkedIn Monday, and OpenAI later confirmed it to media outlets. Hiro had previously received backing from prominent fintech venture capital firms including Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive.

Deal Details and Shutdown

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and Hiro had never publicly revealed its funding amounts. As part of the acquisition, Hiro will cease operations on April 20 and delete all data from its servers by May 13. This timeline has led industry observers to classify the deal as an "acquihire"—primarily aimed at bringing Hiro's team and expertise into OpenAI rather than continuing the product.

Ethan Bloch

Bloch stated in his post that Hiro's employees will join him at OpenAI, though he did not specify the team size. LinkedIn profiles indicate approximately 10 people are currently associated with Hiro. Bloch himself did not respond to media requests for additional comment.

Hiro's Technology and Focus

Hiro was founded in 2023 and launched its AI financial tool about five months ago. The consumer-facing app allowed users to input personal financial data—such as salary, debt, and monthly expenses—and used models to simulate different scenarios, helping with financial decision-making.

According to Bloch's earlier product demonstrations, Hiro was specifically fine-tuned for financial calculations and included verification options that let users check the accuracy of key computations. While cutting-edge large language models have shown significant improvements on various mathematical tasks in recent years, "getting the math wrong" has remained a persistent weakness. Hiro aimed to address this gap by creating a more reliable financial calculation assistant.

Bloch's Entrepreneurial Background

The acquisition draws additional attention due to Bloch's own track record in fintech. He previously founded Digit, a digital banking product that helped users save money through automated features. In 2021, Digit was acquired by Oportun for over $200 million. This isn't OpenAI's first foray into financial application acquisitions, either. Given that OpenAI is currently developing ChatGPT into a tool for corporate finance teams, bringing in more fintech talent is seen as a signal of its commitment to that direction. Whether OpenAI will build a more specialized, vertical financial app on this foundation remains to be seen.

Some commentators suggest this talent acquisition could also help OpenAI appeal to certain high-frequency fintech user segments. For example, the automated quantitative trading agent OpenClaw has gained popularity in algorithmic stock trading circles, and many of its users reportedly prefer competitor Claude. Bloch had previously created an automated trading agent called "RoboBuffett" based on OpenClaw, which he shared publicly on LinkedIn.

In a media interview, Bloch revealed that Hiro was actually his 15th startup venture. He began tech entrepreneurship at age 13, with his first 13 projects ending in failure. His 14th project was Flowtown, a social media SaaS tool launched in 2009 that he eventually sold for $4.5 million. Bloch later sold Digit for approximately $230 million. Now, his latest company has been acquired by OpenAI—a firm that has repeatedly broken records in growth and funding, and is widely expected to set new benchmarks if it goes public.
