One Year After Nvidia Bought LeptonAI, Its Founder Is Out

Just one year after Nvidia acquired AI startup LeptonAI for hundreds of millions of dollars, the company's founder — and Nvidia's vice president of system software — Jia Yangqing has left the building. According to a report from SemiAnalysis, the split was driven by CEO Jensen Huang's dissatisfaction with the operational performance of the rebranded DGX Cloud Lepton project, along with disagreements over product execution and open-source commitments.

Nvidia bought LeptonAI in April 2025 and relaunched its platform as DGX Cloud Lepton the following June, positioning it as a unified AI compute marketplace. Nvidia originally promised to open-source LeptonAI's core software platform by 2026, but that pledge has yet to be fulfilled. Industry insiders suspect Huang changed his mind after the acquisition and refused to sign off on the open-source plan. A multi-year equity vesting schedule also failed to keep Jia on board.

Beyond internal culture and strategy clashes, the rise of AI agent coding tools like Cursor and Claude Code is reshaping the middleware landscape. These tools lower the engineering bar for building applications, diluting the infrastructure value that platforms like LeptonAI once offered. Jia has since been confirmed as an advisor to GPU cloud provider Hyperbolic, where he'll provide technical guidance on multi-chip systems and compute efficiency.
