Musk's Grok 4.5 goes internal as his 'monthly model' promise slips again

Elon Musk is rolling out Grok 4.5 to employees at Tesla and SpaceX for private beta testing. He also made a new pledge: by the end of the year, SpaceX will release a brand-new, from-scratch model every single month. But there's just one problem. Since Grok 4.3 launched in mid-April, xAI hasn't shipped a single update. Those earlier promises? Already dead on arrival.

The release schedule has become a textbook case of nested delays. On April 18, Musk announced that the "giant model factory" would upgrade every two weeks. The roadmap: Grok 4.4 (1 trillion parameters) in early May, followed by Grok 4.5 (1.5 trillion) by the end of May.

Early May came and went. No Grok 4.4. By mid-May, Musk pivoted, saying the 1.5T V9 model was done and would drop in three to four weeks. Then on May 25, he pushed it back to two to three weeks.

Now it's the end of June, and all we got is a Tesla-only internal beta. As for Grok 4.4? Quietly abandoned amid a slow-motion brain drain at xAI.

SpaceX did throw cash at the problem — in June it bought Cursor's parent company for a hefty sum, hoping to patch the talent hole with an acquired team and codebase. But the hemorrhage of key personnel makes Musk's AI factory sound more like a popgun than a roaring engine.
