GPU expert Scott Gray reportedly leaves OpenAI, another early hire exits

OpenAI engineer Scott Gray has reportedly left the company, marking another exit from the AI lab's early ranks.

Gray was among OpenAI's earliest technical hires. In 2016, the company announced he was joining alongside Dario Amodei, Jack Clark, and others. Before that, he worked at Nervana Systems, where he specialized in GPU performance optimization for deep learning.

For years, Gray focused on low-level performance and GPU work. Early on, he wrote GPU assembly and kernels — the low-level programs that execute computations on the hardware. He later contributed to the Sparse Transformer, Scaling Laws, and GPT-3, and his name also appears on GPT-4's contributor list.

The departure adds to a recent string of executive and core personnel changes at OpenAI, including Brad Lightcap, Denise Dresser, and Fidji Simo.

The news stems from a community rumor on X.
