Sam Altman Sides With Anthropic's CEO on Slowing Frontier AI

On September 13, OpenAI founder Sam Altman said, "I agree with Dario Amodei (Anthropic's CEO) that we need to control the progress of frontier models. This has been a major topic of discussion at OpenAI recently. Committing to give independent evaluators employee-like access is a good idea, and we'll do that too. We'll have more to share soon."

Earlier, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a long essay arguing the industry has to slow the pace at which it pushes AI models forward. Slowing down doesn't mean stopping model training or technological progress — it means making sure companies have enough time to work on alignment and safeguard their models.

Amodei also proposed that frontier AI companies in democracies coordinate and set shared safety standards.
