Anthropic and OpenAI Want Slower AI. Chip Stocks Are Already Bracing.

September 11, 2026 | Source: t | Anthropic, OpenAI | 30 views 0 comments

On September 13, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a long post arguing that the industry has to slow down how fast it pushes AI model capabilities. Slowing the pace, he wrote, doesn't mean stopping model training or technical progress — it means making sure companies get enough time to work on alignment and to protect their models. OpenAI founder Sam Altman agreed: "I agree with Dario Amodei (Anthropic CEO) that we need to control the progress of frontier models. That's been a main topic of discussion at OpenAI lately. Committing to give independent evaluators employee-like access is a great idea, and we'll do it too. We'll have more to share soon."

The stance from the two AI giants threw cold water on the market, which read it as a prisoner's dilemma that can't actually slow the AI race down. On the surface, safety testing, runtime monitoring, and third-party verification simply can't keep up with how fast models iterate. Near-term, that weighs on sentiment across the AI sector and trims short-term expectations for next-generation models. The giants want to push the next round of big R&D spending out, cash in on the products they already have, and take some heat out of infrastructure and capital spending.
