Google just spent $10 million to win a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines' corporate data. That haul includes roughly 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, plus spreadsheets, calendars, and operational records. Google says it plans to use the data to improve its products and AI models.
AI data company Mercor also bid for the trove, but its final offer stalled at $7.5 million. The sale still needs sign-off from the U.S. bankruptcy court.
This isn't an isolated case. Back in April, defunct cielo24 sold off 13 years' worth of Slack, Jira, email, and Google Drive assets. Corporate digital remains, it seems, are the new frontier for AI mining.
