Google Search Now Codes Apps and Makes Calls in the Box

Search engines are evolving from simple link directories into live-coding, task-running AI workshops.

At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, Google announced major upgrades to Search: AI Mode, which hit 1 billion monthly active users in its first year, will now default to the free Gemini 3.5 Flash model and integrate the Antigravity programming framework for the first time. This lets the search box write code on the fly, generating custom mini-apps and simulation widgets in real time.

The most hardcore breakthrough is "live programming and generative UI." When you search for complex concepts or long-running tasks, Search won't just give you text answers — it'll write code in the background and render an interactive component right there, like a gear-turning physics simulator or an interactive data chart.

For recurring tasks like wedding planning, moving logistics, or workout tracking, Search can write code from scratch and package it into a dedicated mini-app or dashboard. That app automatically pulls from Google Maps, live weather, and local reviews via APIs, and you can save it for ongoing use.

The search box itself is getting its biggest overhaul in 25 years: it now supports multimodal input — text, images, video, files, and Chrome tabs — plus smart AI-powered suggestion prompts.

Beyond that, Search is entering the age of agents. "Information agents" will scan the entire web 24/7 in the cloud and notify you when specific conditions are met, like a home listing within your budget and school district, or a sneaker drop. "Booking agents" can handle complex local service reservations in one click. And more disruptively, in the US, you can just ask Google to "let Google call" a business on your behalf to book a salon appointment or housekeeping service.

As of now, the Gemini 3.5 Flash-powered AI Mode is rolling out globally. Information agents and live-coded mini-apps will launch this summer for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. The "call for you" and one-click booking features will also roll out broadly in the US this summer.
