Google has shut down Project Mariner, the Chrome browser AI agent that was a star of last year's Google I/O. The tool could autonomously perform multi-step tasks on web pages. The shutdown page states that the technology has been migrated to other Google products and directs users to Gemini Agent.
Wired reporter Max Zeff noted two months ago that Google had already reassigned Project Mariner team members to higher-priority projects, as competition from agents like OpenClaw forced the company to reallocate resources. From its spotlight at I/O 2025 to its official shutdown, Project Mariner lasted less than a year. With Google I/O 2026 just two weeks away, the company is under pressure to deliver a more powerful AI agent product.
