Recursive, an AI startup co-founded by former DeepMind chief scientist Tim Rocktäschel, today exited stealth mode with a bang. The company is betting that the fastest path to superintelligence involves AI running its own experiments to improve itself — no humans needed. To back that bet, Recursive announced a $650 million funding round, valuing the company at $4.65 billion.

The round, which the startup calls "significantly oversubscribed," was led by GV (Google Ventures) and Greycroft, with NVIDIA and AMD Ventures also participating.
Recursive currently employs just over 25 people, but its team includes researchers who previously led work at OpenAI, Meta, and Salesforce. The core idea: human intelligence emerged from an open-ended evolutionary process, so the quickest route to artificial superintelligence is to automate scientific discovery itself — replacing manually designed AI algorithms with systems that can design and test their own.
