DeepSeek knocks Google off the top of OpenRouter's weekly API chart

DeepSeek just knocked Google off the top spot on OpenRouter's weekly request leaderboard. The model aggregation platform's data shows DeepSeek logged 299 million text requests this week, or 27.1% of all traffic on the platform. Google, which had held the lead for a long stretch, came in at 277 million requests and 25.0%. OpenAI landed third with 185 million, 16.8%.

That leaderboard rolls up text API request counts by model maker, so calls to DeepSeek V4 Flash, V4 Pro, and other DeepSeek models all get credited to DeepSeek.

The surge is mostly a V4 story. OpenRouter previously said DeepSeek's token share roughly doubled in the six months after V4 launched, with growth driven largely by agent tasks. One month after V4 Flash went live, it already accounted for 70% of DeepSeek's agent token usage. Agents tend to make multiple back-to-back model calls to complete a single task, which is an easy way to inflate request counts.
